Classroom news

We are now passed the two month mark here at school! In JK we have been exploring the Jewish holidays of Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot and Simchat Torah; learning about the symbols associated with these holidays and the variety of ways these holidays are celebrated in different Jewish homes. Your children are learning to use Hebrew words associated with these holidays as well as some everyday expressions. Each week your children bring home a “machberet” with a transliterated list of the words we have introduced that week and an English definition. I encourage you to look at these “machberot” with your children to reinforce what we have learned in class, as they are meant to be shared. Children in JK often have trouble retelling their parents what exactly they learned in class. The machberet can trigger their memory and help foster dialogue. Your children are also beginning to recognize their Hebrew names, both by sight and sound. As we begin our study of the aleph bet, we will continue to explore the letters in our Hebrew names and begin to learn how to write them.

We are moving onto our Shabbat unit, where we will explore the story of creation and the customs associated with “the day of rest.” Through music, games, art, and stories we will continue our exploration of what it means to be Jewish, fostering pride about the different ways we each live Jewishly.

As always, do not hesitate to contact me via email if you have any questions or concerns.

In Senior Kindergarten we have been very busy learning and having fun! Through song, arts and crafts, storytelling, dramatic play, and reading and writing, we have been exploring what it means to be Jewish and how we can bring Judaism into our lives. Our program enhances the students’ appreciation for Judaism and for a Jewish lifestyle.

For the past few weeks, the students have been learning about why we celebrate different holidays and the Jewish symbols that represent each holiday. We are making our very own Shabbat Boxes, where we will make the different objects needed to celebrate Shabbat. Once completed the students will take their Shabbat Box home and bring the magic of Shabbat into their own homes! The students are becoming familiar with Hebrew words and greetings. We are teaching the Alef Bet as the children are learning a new letter each week and vocabulary beginning with that letter.

Grade one Jewish Studies at the Downtown Jewish Community School is something very special this year. We started our sweet year by making Honey cake in class. We are learning about B’reshit by making a banner with the days of creation and seeing the culmination of the creation of our world with Gods gift to the Jewish people the Sabbath. We are learning songs, having communal snacks, reading meaningful stories, creating beautiful artwork and building a strong community within our class.
